Project 1 Concepts

These are 10 concept designs I have come up with for my first project in Type class. It's difficult to choose one idea over another, because I feel I can make anything look good if I applied myself. Some of the designs with pictures may be difficult to finalize, so they may be left behind for some of these type only posters.

Project One, Avant Garde poster paragraph

The Avant Garde font was created in the 1960s by Herb Lubalin and his partner, Tom Carnase, for a magazine of the same name. Lubalin and Carnase designed the font to be in stark contrast to mainstream typeface that was so widely used by corporate America. A very advanced, creative, and innovative design, Avant Garde functions as a herald of futuristic thought and progressive ideas. Lubalin has said this typeface is widely misunderstood and often misused. Tony DiSpigna, another partner of Lubalin, has been quoted as saying, "The first time Avant Garde was used was one of the few times it was used correctly." Ed Benguiat, a legend in the typeface industry, has stated, "The only place Avant Garde looks good is in the words Avant Garde." One must be very careful when using Avant Garde in one's design. By keeping the future and cutting-edge design in mind like the name implies, one's creation may truly be Avant Garde.

Daft Punk poster

There are three types of font in this image, but I will only discuss the two that are really eye-catching to me. The group's name, Daft Punk, is done in a style that is very similar to GFY Bobby from the Chank GFY Handwriting Fontpack #2 collection. The date, July 21 2007, is done in a Doublepoint style from Volcano Doublepoint. Both styles are very modern and have an identity function. This poster belongs to one of my roommates and is framed in my living room. It's a really neat picture with unique typeface and that's why I selected it as an example for my Typography class.

Sketchbook page 2

Here is the second page out of my sketchbook for Typography I class. We have to do a poster  that includes a font we picked out of a list. I was approved to do a poster with Avant Garde Bold Standard. After a bit of research on the designer of Avant Garde, Ed Benguiat, I found a style of his that really caught my eye. I'm not sure if we can use the exact font created due to copyright infringement, or if we have to use something original with inspiration from the original work.
